In January of 1999, while in the midst of the Peace Prayer music tour, Heather became debilitatingly ill, was terminally diagnosed with stage 4 breast to bone cancer. In December of 1999, after she had recorded Spirit On Fire while lying flat on her back in bed where she had spent much of the year, Heather wrote the following.

"In the year since I was given months to live, friends and family have poured out so much love, prayer and support that Frankie and I have felt lifted and carried beyond our wildest dreams. This recording is dedicated to all of you.

True Love

Spirit On Fire expresses my journey through the fire of transformation, times of ecstasy and of despair, of lightness and of longing. Many of the songs were written years ago and were unconsciously prophetic, metaphors that became all too concrete!

Only one, Return the Love, came during my illness. While close to death in the hospital, I wondered if I could possibly survive. Then I fell asleep. I heard a choir singing the chorus in my dreams. Every time I have sunk low there have been dream messages of inspiration and hope.

Some of the songs are dedicated to the spiritual traditions that guide me.

thumbs up
The Lord's Prayer is for my roots in the Swedenborgian church. With so many friends who feel alienated from their traditions, I am very grateful that I have been able to circle back after traveling far and I feel blessed time and again by profound teachings and a very supportive community.

Many Are the Roads is for every path,....they all inspire me. I would especially like to thank the members of the Tibetan Buddhist sangha led my Chagdud and Jigmed Rimpoche for their friendship, prayers and rituals on my behalf,

as well as the Methodist Church of St Helena whose prayers and support were constant. Also to Hospice of Napa Valley and to our dearest friends who walked our talk with us step by step. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

But mostly this song is for the winding uncertain path that we each have to take on our own unique journey, learning to trust in the unfolding moment."

Much love to you on your journey.
