Heather painting in bed

Heather painting in nursing
home on makeshift easel
made by brother Jonathan

2/99

The following is an account of Heather's process in painting written by one of Heather's closest friends, Carol McIntyre, an art therapist and family counselor.
"They are absolutely beautiful paintings and reflect the deep journey she was on. The painting exhausted her much more than playing music. Heather and I had nonspoken agreement to not really talk about the meaning of what she was painting.
After morning meditation, I would set up the makeshift easel that was designed so that she could paint while lying propped up in bed. I put the paints on small paper plates for her palate and then washed her brushes as she painted. There was a deep awesome essence she seemed to channel through the tip of the brush. The paintings seemed to be created before they even hit the paper. I know she was not deciding what to do in advance but these came like visions or dreams as she worked. Most of them took several days before they were completed."
Swimming swimming

"The one with the blue and red background where she seems to be in free fall was the first one painted. She painted with such laser focus it just poured out of her."

Floating floating

"The next one she painted was her essence dancing. I could tell you when she painted that one she seemed to be dancing as she painted it."

Spirit On FIre

"The one on fire represented the essence of fire that was coming through the brush as she painted it. I remember watching her do that and wondering about the intensity of energy she was moving with as she painted it. Her brush moved quickly and deliberately and knew exactly what to do next. I think she completed that painting in one day."

The Guardian | The Lovers

"She then moved into the relationship ones. She was immersed in a river of rapid feelings and movements and they naturally flowed onto the canvas. I know she was so appreciative of the deep feelings she was having with you and for you. That meant a great deal to her."

Pink Lady
"The last painting was the pink lady. That one was very slow going. I think it was soooo meaningful for her to do but it was very hard for her to have enough energy and strength. At that time, her sister Karen visited and gave her a small palatte which kept the paint moist from session to session."

"I don't want to analyze or say what she meant by any of the paintings. It is all there for people to take in and feel. Her paintings are strong and if you let yourself sense them from your own navel area, they will speak to you deeply and directly.

Heather so wanted to live and convey her message of love, life, creativity and love for spirit. Her presence was huge, much bigger than her failing body. I remember coming over a couple of weeks before she died, standing at the back door, and hearing her sing. Her essence was fired and intensified and enlarged. Her voice carried full, big and beautiful. There was only a skeleton of a body left yet her voice filled the whole house and the empty spaces of the canyon.

That's how she painted, big, whole, on fire, intense, laser focused, flowing through rapids, determined, more alive than anything I have ever witnessed."

Love to you Francis,
Carol
